What is Home buildings insurance?
Buildings insurance covers loss or damage to your home’s fixtures and fittings, fitted kitchen and bathrooms as well as the construction of your home.
What is Home contents insurance?
Contents insurance covers loss or damage to the contents in your home which would normally include furniture, paintings, jewellery, TV, game consoles and any thing else which is movable.
If I am found responsible for damage caused to third parties, will I be covered by the policy?
Yes, as long as the cause of the damage is one of the perils covered by the policy, up a maximum limit as specified in the policy wording.
What is my policy excess?
The policy excess is the first part of any claim for which you are responsible. It varies according to peril under which you are claiming.
What amount should I insure my Home buildings for?
The buildings should be insured for the total rebuilding cost, together with the replacement value of the permanent fixtures and fittings. It should also include the cost of demolition and removal of debris in the case of a total loss.
What amount should I insure my Home contents for?
The contents should be insured for their replacement value. Sometimes electronic items such as TV’s, mobile phones, PC and laptops depreciate in value and therefore the sum insured has to reflect the current market values.
Should I regularly update my sums insured?
Yes. It is very important to keep your sums insured updated.
Will I remain covered if the Home is unoccupied?
Depending on the period of time your Home is unoccupied. Normally, up to 3 months there is no additional premium subject to the property being regularly visited by someone entrusted by you. If the property is going to be unoccupied for more that 3 months and without regular visits, there will be an additional premium.
Do I have to install an alarm?
It is not mandatory to have an alarm system, but we may recommend that you install one, or improve your security locks, depending on the content’s sum insured and location of the insured property.
Do you have a list of approved security suppliers?
No. You are free to choose your own suppliers.
What are valuable items?
Valuable or High Risk items are those items which are attractive to thieves including:
- TV, personal computer, audio and video equipment
- Jewellery and watches
- Clocks, works of art, curios and collections
- Furs
- Photographic equipment
Should I keep damaged items?
Yes. They are the proof of a valid claim and until the claim has been settled we recommend that these are not disposed of.
How do I cover any items that I take away from the Home?
They should be insured under a different section, namely the All Risks Section. These would be covered anywhere in the Maltese islands, Europe, or Worldwide according to your choice of cover.
Will my policy be affected if I go away on holiday?
No, provided your Home is not left unoccupied for more than 3 months.
What should I do if I move Home?
You should inform us so that we will be able to change your risk address and amend the sums insured.
I have a spare room in my Home set up as an office. Am I insured for this?
Anything which is used for commercial/business purposes is usually insured under a commercial policy. We recommend that you contact us to confirm that cover is operative.
How do I make a claim?
You should contact us as soon as you can. We will be able to guide you once you notify us.
Should I authorise repairs prior to getting consent from Elmo?
We recommend that you contact us before proceeding with any repairs.
My neighbour is carrying out some building work. Am I covered if he damages my property as a result?
There are some cases where you are covered, such as impact with your buildings, but we suggest you contact us to confirm that cover is operative.
Does my premium increase if I have a claim?
No, your premium does not increase with claims, but it may increase following a series of claims.
